American Workplaces are “Age Friendlier” in 2008 Boston, MA & Nashville, TN - April 14, 2008- Today, at the 2008 SHRM Staffing Management Conference, RetirementJobs.com, the #1 career website for job-seekers aged 50+, issued its research findings that the environment for American workers over 50 years of age, and consequent employee and job seeker perceptions, have improved and become “age friendlier” within the past 12 months. This favorable trend is most pronounced in general administration, sales, education, healthcare and retail. Conversely, certain sectors appear to have become less “age friendly” including entertainment, telecommunications, marketing and information technology. The observation is based on increased employer awareness, employment trends, successful public/private initiatives for experienced workers, and ongoing research that the company conducts of employers, employees and job seekers nationwide. One year ago, at the 2007 SHRM Conference, RetirementJobs.com, announced the national launch of its RetirementJobs.com Age Friendly Employer Certification™ Program – a unique initiative to identify and expand the number of employers that consistently maintain policies, practices and programs to hire and retain 50+ workers. Upon completion of RetirementJobs.com’s rigorous evaluation process (examining 33 factors known to be present in age-neutral work environments), qualifying companies are officially designated as an Within the past year, RetirementJobs.com has investigated and certified a broad range of employers—and sees an ongoing, encouraging trend that U.S. employers are increasingly embracing the value of age 50+ workers—as evidenced through increased hiring, support of age as an element of diversity HR programs, affirmative action in providing meaningful employment, flexible work arrangements, training and development opportunities, and provision of competitive pay and benefits to ‘older’ workers. “From all indications, including new research we’re about to release, we’ve seen that employers increasingly want to benefit from the experience, skills and qualities that 50+ plus workers can bring to their workforces,” says Tim Driver, CEO of RetirementJobs.com. “Employers tell us these employees prove to be loyal, reliable and valuable; and we note they are proactively implementing age-friendly HR policies and practices in order to retain and attract experienced talent.” Given that 20% of the U.S. workforce will be age 55 or older by 2012, and with a majority of the 78 million-strong Baby Boomer generation planning to forestall conventional retirement, employers’ and employees’ needs are coinciding for mutual benefit.” Central to the company’s conclusions are the findings of the RetirementJobs.com forthcoming 2008 “Age Bias in the American Workforce” Research Report and its second-annual Age Bias Index©, both of which are based on an opinion survey of more than 5,000 employees and employers in the U.S. The 2008 Report and Age Bias Index will be issued later this quarter.
